Original marine art created in an ever changing environment. On a boat at sea.

After a successful career is advertising as an agency creative director, Robert Phillips turned his attention to oil and canvas. Spending a great many spare hours as a boatyard buff, Bob had developed a fascination for the 'sculptural look' of a boat out of the water. He began to explore the play of light, shadow and reflection on the surface of a hull. This would become the subject matter of his early paintings. Upon moving to the caribbean, Bob picked up on the same play of light, shadow and reflection but now on the hills, waters, skies and sailboats he found in his newly adopted home in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Today, Bob is an active sailor and painter in the V.I. Because he is out on the water so often he takes his studio with him and sometimes paints 'on the hook'. Boatowners have commissioned paintings of their own yachts and Bob is happy to work with owners to that end. He actively shows his work at marinas and galleries near his home port of St. John.

If you come across a cosy harbor with turquoise water chances are Bob will be there!
