Robert Phillips was born in Southern California and, like most Californians, spent much of his youth on the beach. But it wasn't until he moved to New York to begin a successful advertising career that he learned how to sail. It was an activity that would stay with him through club racing, local cruising and three boats of his own.

This love affair with 'the sail' continues to keep Bob on the water today.

Although educated as an advertising creative director, it wasn't until leaving the business world that Bob began to paint. He worked to combime his love of sailing with his love of art. He began painting on his boat and has created a business called Studio at Sea and thus this website. "I take my studio with me and paint in calm harbors." No surprise that sailing took Bob to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. There he has sailed and painted both on charter bareboats and also as a land-loving resident. "Whether on or off a boat, the light is just incrediable. And because of the mountains I'm continually fascinated by the movement of cloud shadows over both the land and sea.

Throw in a few sails on the horizon and I'm in Heaven."

Within the first six months of laying paint to canvas Bob won two awards at juried shows sponsored by The Greenwich Art Society. His work can be found in private collections and he is a member of

The American Society of Marine Artists. He currently splits his time between the Long Island Sound

and the Pillsbury Sound.
